About Tap Tug

Tap Tug is the simplest contest there is: who can tap faster? A rope runs across the middle of the screen with a knot in the centre. Every tap you make pulls it a step towards you. Every tap your opponent makes pulls it back.

How a match works

The game counts down from three, and then both buttons are live. The knot has to travel twelve steps from the centre to reach either end. Because both players are pulling, that means you need to get twelve taps ahead, not just make twelve taps.

A close contest can swing back and forth for some time. An uneven one is over in three seconds.

Sitting and setting up

On a phone or tablet, lay the device flat and sit facing each other. The top half of the screen is turned round so that the player opposite sees their button the right way up. On a computer, the two players share the keyboard and use the A and L keys.

How to win

Keep your finger close to the glass. The distance your finger travels on each tap is what limits your speed, so tiny movements beat big jabs.

Try two fingers. Drumming with your index and middle fingers in turn nearly doubles your rate, and there is no rule against it.

Brace your hand. Rest your wrist or the heel of your hand on the table so that only your fingers move.

Start on time. A surprising number of contests are decided in the first half second, by whoever was watching the countdown.

Do not give up when you fall behind. Tapping is tiring, and an opponent who sprints at the start often fades.

It is over quickly, loud in the best way, and one of the purest two-player HTML5 games you can play on a single phone.
